The auction for SA20 2024 occurred on 27 September 2023 in Johannesburg. Teams had already retained many players from the inaugural season; however, we saw a great deal of money spent during the auction to sign new players. Joburg Super Kings seemed to be very aggressive in the auctions; they bought 3 out of the top 4 most expensive players. Here are the 5 most expensive players of SA20 2024:

5. Bayers Swanepoel (R 600,000)

Sunrisers Eastern Cape bought the bowling allrounder Bayers Swanepoel for INR 26 lakh. Apart from SA20, Bayers also plays in other cricket leagues and has decent career stats.

4. Wayne Madsen (R 850,000)

Joburg Super Kings signed the 40-year-old right-hand batter Wayne Madsen for INR 36.85 lakh. We have also seen him playing in the PSL tournament.

3. Romario Shepherd (R 850,000)

Joburg Super Kings spent the same amount, INR 36.85 lakh, on the bowling allrounder Romario Shepherd. He plays international cricket for the West Indies and has impressive career statistics. We have seen him playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL.

2. Dayyaan Galiem (R 1.6 million)

The South African right-arm medium-fast bowler Dayyaan Galiem received R 1.6 million (INR 69.36 lakh) from Joburg Super Kings. He has also played for South Africa Under 19s.

Pretoria Capitals signed the bowling allrounder Matthew Boast for INR 69.36 lakh. The 20-year-old South African player Boast played in the Under 19 World Cup in 2022.

Teams’ Purse in SA20 2024 Auction

A total of 6 teams, owned by different IPL teams, are going to compete in this tournament. Each team was required to have at least 10 South African players in the squad and include a maximum of 7 overseas cricketers. Additionally, the team needed to add one rookie player and one wild card.

To encourage young talent, the official board has introduced the concept of a rookie – a South African player aged 22 or younger who hasn’t participated in the SA20 tournament earlier. Teams can add any domestic or international player to the squad even after the auction, but they need to do it before the deadline, which was 30th December 2023 for this season.

Tristan Stubbs is one of them; he received R 9 million (INR 4.4 crore) just like the previous year, and currently, he is the most expensive player in the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Pretoria Capitals had the biggest purse in the auction, and they had the most vacant seats to fill in their squad.

The purse of SA20 is around R 70 million, which is approximately INR 33.5 crore. It is the third-richest franchise-based T20 cricket league in terms of salaries.
