Fans were eagerly waiting to know the 15 players in the Indian squad that will travel to the West Indies and the United States of America (USA) to participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the names of these 15 players on 30 April.
Rohit Sharma will be the team’s captain while Hardik Pandya will be vice-captain. The selection of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah was no surprise to the fans and cricket experts, however, a few entries were unexpected. From Virat Kohli who is currently the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), to the number one ranked T20I batter on ICC’s men’s rankings, Suryakumar Yadav, the team consists of 15 world-class cricketers. The traveling reserves include Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.
What Fans Were Expecting
All-rounders often play crucial roles in critical situations, and that’s why the selectors have included four talented players who can contribute with both ball and bat. The selection of Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja was no surprise but fans were expecting to see either Shivam Dube or Axar Patel in the squad, however, selectors picked both of them.
Before the official announcement, there was a race among the players to secure their position in the squad. The most intense battle was going on for the wicket-keeping position. It was also hard for the selectors to pick two names from the 7 contenders: Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, and Dhruv Jurel.
Beating the other contenders, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant have emerged victorious for the wicket-keeping position. Their performance in the ongoing IPL 2024 has played a huge role in their victory. Pant and Sanju currently are the top two leading run scorers among the other wicket-keepers in the tournament. KL Rahul with 398 runs was also a strong contender but unfortunately couldn’t secure his place in the squad.
Apart from KL Rahul, another deserving name that is missing is Rinku Singh. He has been doing well in the IPL from past few years. In T20I, he has played 11 matches and scored 356 runs with a strike rate of 176.23, but still couldn’t impress the selectors enough to join the squad but he will be there as a reserve player.
India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Schedule
As we know, the teams participating in the T20 World Cup have been divided into 4 groups, India has been placed in the group A alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and USA. The team will play their first match in the tournament against Ireland on 5 June. Here is the complete list of matches India will play in Group A:
