Pitch Report
The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium is well known for supporting the spin bowlers. There are only a few pavilions in India where we see the bowlers dominating the game instead of the batters. The pitch here gets slower as the match progresses and therefore toss winners often prefer batting first. In ODI matches played on this pitch, teams that play first often take the game, you can see it clearly in the stats:
ODI matches played in Chidambaram | 262 |
Average first innings score | 234 |
Matches won after batting first | 15 |
Matches won by chasing team | 11 |
History
The Madras Presidency in 1859, bought the Chepauk palace in an auction for INR 589,000 and a few years later, the Madras Cricket Club was granted the permission from government to build a pavilion. The Chepauk Stadium was established in 1916 and has been hosting both domestic and international matches ever since.
The first-ever international match on this ground was held on 10-13 February 1934 between India and England. The same year the first match of Ranji Trophy was also played here. This stadium remained functional until 1982 when it was demolished for renovation purposes. Along with a new look it also got a new name with time.
The M.A. Chidambaram stadium is special for the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and his fans. Sachin has scored 876 runs (the highest he scored at any venue) here on this ground. Cricket fans have witnessed many memorable moments on this ground including the test match against the South Africa in 2008 where the Virender Sehwag played a knock of 319 runs and Rahul Dravid achieved the milestone of 10,000 test runs.
